Dr Covadonga Orejas Saco del Valle

Researcher, Instituto EspaƱol de Oceanografia (IEO), Santander, Spain I am a benthic ecologist, Orejas Sacospecialised on the study of the biology and ecology of Antarctic and other Cold-water corals. I have been developing my research activities in research Institutes in Germany (Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, AWI and Center of Marine and Tropical Ecology, ZMT) and in Spain (Marine Science Institute, CSIC and currently the Spanish Oceanographic Institute, IEO). My main research interest, focus on the spatial distribution and demographic study of Cold-water corals as well as on its reproductive and trophic ecology. Most of my research experience is based on deep shelf areas in different oceans, but I am also interested in coastal ecology. Research on Marine Protected Areas and conservation ecology is another of my scientific interest. My favourite sampling devices are the non intrusive methods, as ROVs, underwatercameras and submersibles which offer high quality qualitative and quantitative information and offer a wide field of research on technological and methodological development. I have been involved in around 40 research projects, and participated in 20 research cruises in the Antarctic, Arctic, North Sea, Caribbean, Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. I published my work in more than 30 research papers and 3 book chapters. More details on my research could be found under:
